We were invited to join a masterclass and meet three leading winemakers who conducted an in-depth exploration of the Alto Jahuel region, a specific area within the Alto Maipo, Chile. Hosted by The Drinks Business Editor-in-Chief Patrick Schmitt MW, the event took place on Monday 6th December at Asia House, London.

Sebastián Labbé – head winemaker at Viña Santa Rita, Emily Faulconer, head winemaker at Viña Carmen and Andres Ilabaca, head of research and development at Santa Rita Estates joined us via Zoom link from Chile.

The Alto Jahuel region is located in the foothills of the Andes and boasts an international reputation for producing some of the best Cabernet Sauvignon’s in the world. Over the last two decades this area has been the subject of much research within Santa Rita Estates, culminating in a US$30 million vineyard regeneration scheme known as WiSe. This masterclass covered findings from soil studies, research and development and  included tasting of both finished and unblended wines.

We sampled a selection of Cabernet wines raging from £12 to £100.
