Producing 2 million litres of wine annually, Irurtia is Uruguay’s third biggest producer and boasts the country’s largest vineyard by area. Like most Uruguayan wineries, it is still owned by the same family and now the 4th generation has taken over the family legacy and the challenges of continuing the path of their ancestors – including the responsibility of maintaining and increasing world recognition of Irurtia Wines.

They’re particularly proud of their Km.0 line of wines which are named after the point very close to Carmelo at which the Uruguay and Paraná rivers join to form the Río de la Plata. Notable wines include their Gran Reserva Pinot Noir and a creamy Gran Reserva Viognier, which spends 6 months in French and American oak.

The KM 0 line is divided in to two: The Reserva and the Gran Reserva wines. The first is composed of: Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, plus Malbec and a blend of Tannat/Syrah for the reds. For the whites, they have Gewürztraminer, Chardonnay, Viognier and Sauvignon Blanc.

The Gran Reserva line, has three varieties.

KM.0 Gran Reserva Viognier

A marvellous, medium-full bodied white, great to drink alone, with seafood, or pastas with creamy sauces.  Refreshing stone fruits and melon aromas on the nose. This is a wine with true varietal typicality, complex, with a very balanced acidity that gives it freshness. Lovely silky finish with a hint of vanilla aftertaste, due to spending 6 months in French and American oak barrels.

KM.0 Gran Reserva Pinot Noir

A very well-structured Pinot. A marvellous red to have as an aperitif or to eat with lean red meats, white meats with spiced sauces or even oily fish. It has charming hints of fennel and dill and red fruits on the nose. Delicate on the palate with notes of cherries, blackberries and blueberries, firm and harmonious tannins. The 12 month ageing process in oak barrels generates a unique toasty finish.

KM.0 Gran Reserva Tannat

An astonishing full-bodied red wine which perfectly represents the dedication of the Irurtias to show off the full potential of Carmelo´s Tannat. Very complex on the nose and concentrated with ripe red fruits and plum raisin aromas. Great character – bold, but at the same time offering soft tannins in an excellent finish that speaks of elegance and personality. Aged for 18 months in oak barrels.
